Abstract

This research aims to investigate the nature of critical discourse in Amina Youssef's literary works through focusing on one of her works, namely “The Semiotics of a Narrative Text”. This research therefore has been divided into three main parts: a) the critic’s aims and assumptions, b) the approach and critical reference and c) the critical practice and application. The first part deals with the specification of goals and objectives, proposing hypotheses and presenting issues at both the theoretical and practical levels. The second parts, presents an analysis of the key critical concepts, terms and issues covered in the book. The third part addresses three main points: first, the functions of criticism including the methodical, pedagogical, ideological and ethical functions; second, scientific objectivity; third, a pairing of theory and practice.
