Cohesion in the Poem of “al-Rāḥil al-Ḥabīb” by Issa Bin Ali Jaraba

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the various ways in which cohesion is exhibited in the poem "al-Rāḥil al-Ḥabīb" by Issa bin Ali Jaraba. The study examines how cohesion affects the overall coherence of the poetic text and the merging of its different sections. To achieve this, the research relies on the textual theory principles proposed by Depeaugrande and Dressler for analysis. The study begins with a theoretical introduction discussing the concepts and terminology related to cohesion. It is then divided into three sections: phonetic cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and lexical cohesion. The study finds a variety of means for achieving textual cohesion in the poem "al-Rāḥil al-Ḥabīb" on three levels. On the phonetic level, the cohesive texture of the text was created by the combination of poetic meter, rhythm, rhyme, inflection, and prosodic features. On the grammatical level, the use of pronouns, connectives, and tools played a prominent role in creating cohesion in the text. The same effect was also achieved through linking. On the lexical level, the text achieved cohesion through the use of repetition, either in whole or in part.
