Stream of Consciousness in Ali Abu Al-Rish’s Novel Sarah's Shirt

Abstract

This research aims to approach Ali Abu Al-Rish’s Novel Sarah's Shirt, who based his text on various psychological states of the characters. Therefore, we chose ‘stream of consciousness’, a term that was first introduced by the American psychologist William James. The research was divided into an introduction and five sections. The first section dealt with the broken personality and the shadows of the Oedipus complex: the psychological identification with the stream. The second section discussed modern ‘stream’ techniques in the novel. However, the third section touched on the creative personality and the shadows of Leonardo da Vinci. The fourth section touched on the negative memory in Sarah’s Shirt. The fifth section focused on the discourse of challenge and the production of the active self. The research concluded that the novel depicted the psychological states of the characters in crisis, alienated, and self-absorbed, away from the apparent behavioral description, but rather by diving into the individual’s personal experiences and this term is most appropriate to describe a style of narration based on the flowing form of narration that breaks the stereotype of traditional narration and is concerned with the psychological and mental aspects of the individual.
