Variation of Ibn Malik's Alfiyyah in Presenting Issues of Arabic Grammar

Abstract

This research investigates the variation in Ibn Malik's Alfiyyah in presenting Arabic grammar rules. The study identifies a noticeable diversity in how grammatical issues are addressed, often influenced by the poetic structure of the text. Ibn Malik's approach varies significantly, with some rules presented in different ways within the same chapter. The research traces these variations to uncover their underlying patterns. It is structured into an introduction and five sections: the first explores the presentation of rules and examples; the second addresses rules and areas of disagreement; the third examines the use of Arabic dialects; the fourth discusses rules classified under "Usul"; and the fifth analyzes inconsistencies in the presentation of grammatical issues. The study highlights several key inconsistencies. For instance, some rules are presented with examples, while others are omitted or replaced by examples alone. Disagreements are inconsistently treated—sometimes explicitly noted with opposing views, other times entirely ignored, even in widely debated issues. This analysis reveals the complexity of Ibn Malik’s approach, reflecting both the constraints of poetic form and his flexibility in addressing grammatical topics.
