Similar Verses Containing the Root Dh-K-R: A Rhetorical Study

This paper probes the rhetorical logic behind the Quran’s use of the root dh-k-r in verses that appear outwardly similar. By comparing each pair or cluster of similar verses, the study explains why the text sometimes opts for a nominal form instead of a verbal one, substitutes a single letter, or replaces one clause structure with another. Two focal sections analyze, first, shifts in morphological form and, second, shifts in syntactic arrangement. The findings reveal that dh-k-r spans a rich semantic field—ranging from “remembrance” and “supplication” to “glorification”—and that every stylistic variation serves a calculated rhetorical aim, whether to emphasize, omit, singularize, pluralize, masculinize, or feminize. The study shows that the Quran’s nuanced deployment of dh-k-r underscores both its semantic breadth and its matchless stylistic precision.
