Abstract

This study aims to explore the significance of decorations in Byzantine architectural art in northwestern Syria, highlighting their crucial role in providing artistic, archaeological, and historical insights. One such decoration instance is the use grapevine with its leaves and clusters prominently in both architectural sculpture and mosaic art, serving as an interesting scholarly subject for inquiry to interpret certain artistic phenomena and understand the humanistic messages beyond these decorations. The fieldwork, descriptive analytical iconographic methods were employed. The study describes the region under investigation, andthen delves into identifying the grapevine plant, its historical mentions in archaeological texts, and provides a detailed description of the grapevine decorations, classifying them based on their execution styles. Subsequently, the iconographic and symbolic origins of these decorations are examined, highlighting their special status among skilled Christian artists. This study aided in tracing the historical and iconographic origins of these decorations, signifying religious and spiritual connotations, and playing functional and aesthetic roles in Byzantine architecture in northwestern Syria, projecting the distinct personality of ancient Syrian architectural skills.
