Meer Village Mosque in Otmah District: An Archaeological and Artistic Study

This study documents the mosque of Meer village in Otmah District as a significant example of small-scale religious architecture in Dhamar Governorate dating back to the tenth century AH. Employing archaeological field surveys and historical analysis of inscriptions, the research offers a detailed examination of the mosque’s architectural and decorative features, tracing its evolution within the broader context of mosque design in western Yemen. It investigates the mosque’s founding and construction history, provides an artistic and archaeological description of its structural and ornamental elements, and presents a comparative analysis of its wooden ceiling decorations. The findings highlight the mosque’s pivotal role in the development of roofing techniques, with its ceiling art—featuring geometric and botanical motifs alongside documentary inscriptions—serving as a testament to the ingenuity and authenticity of local craftsmanship.
