Motives for the Islamic Conquest: Between Islamic Authenticity and Orientalist Interpretation

The study investigates the nature and underlying motives of the Islamic conquests during the first century AH (seventh century AD), critically examining the interpretations of Orientalists and Muslim historians influenced by them. It challenges prevailing theories that portray the conquests as colonial ventures, arguing instead that they were a continuation of the Prophet Muhammad’s mission to spread monotheism. Through contextual analysis of historical texts, the study refutes claims linking the conquests to material deprivation or forced migration, emphasizing instead the transformative impact of Islam on Arab society as the primary catalyst. Structured into an introduction, preface, two chapters, and a conclusion, the research contrasts Orientalist perspectives with a more historically grounded understanding, ultimately asserting that the conquests were multifaceted, fostered cultural integration, and laid the foundation for Islamic civilization. It concludes that Orientalist views are shaped by their own cultural and religious biases, often distorting the true motivations, while highlighting justice, tolerance, and freedom of belief as defining characteristics that ensured Islam’s enduring presence in conquered regions.
