Ethos Argument in Al-Hariri’s Al-Maqamah Al-Makiyyah (Meccan Maqama)

This research aims to study the rhetorical or pre-discourse ethos in the characters’ speech, and the narrator’s speech, in Al-Hariri’s Al-Maqamah Al-Makiyyah. It aims to explain the manifestations of the formation of the ethos and reveal its role in persuasion as it is one of the means of argument. This research will be based on the argumentative approach, and depends on the rhetorical starting points of debate, whether in ancient rhetoric or new rhetoric. The research was divided into an introduction and two main axes. The first dealt with the study of the rhetorical ethos and its authority in the maqama, and the second dealt with the pre-discourse ethos and its authority in the maqama. The research reached a diversity of manifestations of rhetorical or pre-discourse ethos in Al-Hariri’s Al-Maqamah Al-Makiyyah, between physical ethos, appearance ethos, psychological ethos, social ethos, cognitive ethos... etc., and that all of this is of great importance in achieving persuasion and influencing the psychology of the recipient.
