Abstract

This study examines the autobiographical features of The Neglected from the Memories of a Temple Student by Al-Arfaj, focusing on its artistic characteristics and functional dimensions. The work is analyzed as a distinctive example of Saudi autobiographical writing that successfully integrates factual narration with literary craftsmanship. Employing a compositional analytical approach, the research investigates how the author structures his life narrative to transcend personal memory and reflect a broader historical and cultural moment in Saudi Arabia. The study is organized into a preface contextualizing Al-Arfaj’s autobiographical project, followed by two main sections addressing the artistic manifestations of the text and its functional purposes. The findings indicate that Al-Arfaj reconstructs familiar episodes from his life to generate new interpretive meanings, thereby transforming his individual experience into a universal human narrative. His narrative style emerges as an extension of his personality, while the autobiography presents a comprehensive account of the stages of his life and the formative influences that shaped his intellectual and emotional development. The study concludes that the text fulfills multiple autobiographical functions, including self-reflection, cultural documentation, and the articulation of a personal philosophical stance toward life.
