The Impact of Grammatical Disputes on Determining the Circumstantial Accusative, Its Subject, the Specifier, and Its Referent

This study examines the influence of grammatical disputes on determining the circumstantial accusative (ḥāl) and the specifier (tamīz), focusing on the factors affecting their identification. It highlights the multiplicity of grammatical interpretations regarding the subject and agent of the circumstantial accusative, as well as the referent and governing element of the specifier. Given the frequent disagreements in distinguishing the circumstantial accusative among other accusative forms and identifying its subject, as well as the criteria for determining a word as a specifier, this study delves into the underlying reasons for such variations. It is structured into three sections: the first explores the definition, conditions, and governing rules of the circumstantial accusative; the second examines the definition and conditions of the specifier; and the third investigates key grammatical terminologies affecting these interpretations. By combining theoretical analysis with practical examples, the study underscores how these grammatical disagreements reveal the richness and flexibility of the Arabic language, highlight the historical conflicts between the Basran and Kufan schools, and showcase variations within and beyond these schools. Ultimately, the study clarifies the implications of these differences on syntactic analysis.
