Abstract

This research explores the semiotics of the title in Fatima Al-Qarni’s poetry, focusing on her collection When the South Sang as a case study. Adopting a semiotic approach as the primary tool for analysis, the study examines how titles function as signs and symbols in literary texts. Given the significance of the title as the initial textual threshold that engages the reader and provides a key to understanding the text, this research delves into its role in shaping meaning. The study consists of an introduction that outlines the concept of textual thresholds and semiotics, followed by two main sections. The first section analyzes the different levels of interpreting the title and its functions, while the second examines two closely related textual thresholds: the cover and the dedication, along with an exploration of the introduction threshold. The research concludes with key findings, emphasizing that the notion of "singing" in the collection’s title aligns with the thematic essence of the poems, conveying meanings of joy, attachment to place, and patriotism.
