Artistic Structure and the Utilization of Science in the Novel Shadows of Atlantis and The Throne of Atlantis

Abstract

This paper investigates how scientific ideas inform the imaginative framework and artistic structure of Ammar Al‑Masri’s two‑part science‑fiction novel Atlantis (Shadows of Atlantis and The Throne of Atlantis). Employing literary narrative theory, the research is organized into an introduction, a preface and three sections. It first situates the work within the broader history of Arab and international science fiction, then analyzes the novel’s core concept, plot mechanics, and narrative boundaries. It proceeds to examine how narrative perspective shapes character development, spatial and temporal settings, and thereby broadens the story’s scope. Finally, it explores the integration of science‑fiction tropes—such as temporal manipulation and intertextual nods—and their impact on the novel’s structural design. The findings reveal that Atlantis innovatively fuses scientific imagination with narrative form, drawing on both the genre’s literary lineage and contemporary cinematic influences to create a richly textured spatiotemporal world.
