Paronomasia and Related Devices: A Study of Convergences and Divergences

This paper serves as a continuation of scholarly efforts to explore and clarify the boundaries of paronomasia (al-tawriya) in Arabic rhetoric, focusing on its relationship with other closely or loosely related rhetorical devices. Recognizing the extensive and sometimes overlapping nature of rhetorical figures in the science of badiʿ (ʿilm al-badīʿ), the study investigates how some devices may appear similar in function or name while others diverge more clearly in meaning or usage. The research identifies ten types associated with al-tawriya and organizes them into three categories: general types that include it, types that resemble it, and distinct types that can be substituted by it. The study is structured into three main sections based on this classification. A preface defines al-tawriya, offers examples, and introduces its synonymous term, illusion (al-īhām), followed by a discussion on the causes and implications of overlap among rhetorical figures. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the value of such comparative inquiries in streamlining the understanding of ʿilm al-badīʿ, reducing redundancy, and highlighting the nuanced differences between rhetorical forms. This detailed approach contributes to the refinement of Arabic rhetorical theory and its application.
