The Fictionalization of Reference in Mohammed Hasan Alwan’s Novel A Small Death

This paper explores the concept of the fictionalization of reference in Mohammed Hasan Alwan’s A Small Death, examining how autobiographical techniques typically associated with referential discourse are reshaped within a fictional narrative framework. Using a narratological–generic approach informed by semiotic interpretation, the study investigates three dimensions: the challenge of generic classification, the novel’s referential grounding in Ibn Arabi’s historical life and context, and its fictional construction through textual thresholds and spiritual insights. The findings suggest that A Small Death can be situated generically as a “novel of character,” blending referential material tied to biography and history with imaginative elements derived from a symbolically rich Sufi lexicon. This synthesis highlights how the novel negotiates the tension between documentation and imagination, producing a hybrid discourse that invites interpretive reading across the boundaries of history, fiction, and spirituality.
