Abstract

This study explores the grammatical contributions of Ibn Udhrah al-Khadhrawi, a prominent Andalusian grammarian of the seventh century AH, by examining his life, scholarly output, and methodological approach in his work Al-Ighrab fi Asrar al-Ḥarakat fi al-Iʿrab. The research analyzes his engagement with grammatical debates and his reliance on both transmitted evidence and analogy in forming linguistic judgments. It also highlights the influence of his writings on later scholars, particularly Abu Ḥayyan al-Andalusi, who frequently cited his work. The study is organized into three main sections addressing his biography, his grammatical efforts, and his intellectual influence on subsequent grammarians. The findings demonstrate that Ibn Udhrah occupies a significant position among Andalusian scholars due to his rigorous analytical approach and attention to detail in addressing grammatical issues. At the same time, some of his views were subject to critical examination by later grammarians, reflecting the dynamic nature of grammatical discourse. The study further emphasizes his cautious treatment of transmitted evidence, arguing that not all reported linguistic forms should be generalized through analogy. Overall, Ibn Udhrah’s work reflects a method grounded in critical inquiry, precision, and scholarly rigor within the Arabic grammatical tradition.
