The Argumentative Implications of Explicit Mention and Omission in Prophetic Dialogue: A Pragmatic Study

Abstract

This study investigates the argumentative functions of explicit mention and omission in Prophetic dialogue through a pragmatic analytical framework. It examines how these two rhetorical strategies are employed in Prophetic discourse to achieve persuasive purposes within varying religious, educational, and social contexts. The research focuses on the communicative mechanisms through which explicit mention reinforces key ethical and doctrinal concepts, thereby strengthening the audience’s understanding and conviction. In contrast, omission is analyzed as a subtle argumentative device that directs attention toward implied meanings, stimulates reflective interpretation, and influences the recipient without direct expression. The study further demonstrates that omission can intensify both emotional and intellectual response, enhancing the overall persuasive force of discourse. Through selected examples from the Prophetic Hadith, the analysis reveals the strategic integration of both techniques in constructing effective and impactful communication. The findings confirm that the persuasive power of mention and omission depends fundamentally on context, as their meanings and effects are shaped by the circumstances in which they occur. The study concludes that these rhetorical strategies constitute central elements in the communicative and argumentative effectiveness of Prophetic discourse, highlighting the value of pragmatic approaches in understanding classical Arabic religious texts.
