Abstract

This study investigates Tammam Hassan’s classification of words and its exceptions through the lens of modern linguistics, with the aim of reassessing reformist approaches that challenged traditional Arabic grammar during the twentieth century. Focusing on his descriptive model in The Arabic Language: Its Meaning and Structure, the research analyzes the principles underlying his sevenfold classification of word classes and evaluates the exceptions that emerge within it. The study is structured into a preface discussing his claim regarding the influence of logic on Arabic grammar, followed by two main sections addressing the foundations of word classification in classical and modern scholarship and examining his proposed system in detail. Through analytical critique, the research demonstrates that word classification cannot rest on a single criterion, but must integrate both form and meaning. The findings further reveal that temporal meaning provides a more accurate and realistic basis for distinguishing categories than formal structure alone, since reliance on form tends to produce overlap and imprecision. Temporal reference proves especially effective in differentiating nouns from adjectives and in explaining the affinity between adjectives and verbs. The study concludes that while Tammam Hassan’s model represents an important attempt at grammatical renewal, its explanatory power depends on balancing semantic and structural criteria.
