Abstract

This study investigates the sequential arrangement of the Quranic surahs in the thought of Ibn al-Zubayr al-Gharnati, focusing on its role in demonstrating textual coherence and the structural unity of the Quran. Drawing on his seminal work Al-Burhan fi Tartib Suwar al-Quran, the research identifies the methodological principles underlying his interpretation of the relationships between successive surahs. Employing an analytical approach grounded in the science of munasabah (textual coherence), the study examines how overarching thematic objectives, major textual divisions, linguistic and stylistic connections, and the analogy between the arrangement of verses and the arrangement of surahs contribute to a coherent organizational system. The findings reveal that Ibn al-Zubayr regarded the order of the Quranic surahs as a carefully constructed structure governed by consistent methodological principles rather than a sequence based solely on rhetorical observations. His approach elevates the science of munasabah from the study of isolated rhetorical subtleties to a comprehensive framework for explaining the structural organization of the Quran. The study concludes that Ibn al-Zubayr’s methodology provides an integrated vision of Quranic composition and establishes his important contribution to the scholarly understanding of the Quran’s textual unity and coherence.
