The Aesthetics of Place in the Novel of “Jabal Haliya” by Ibrahim Mudwah Al-Almai

Abstract

This research aims at tracing the aesthetics and techniques of place in the novel of Jabal Haliya by Ibrahim Mudwah Al-Almai through examining the novelist's geometric-narrative conflict as a hypothesis driven by his intimate involvement with place on the one hand, and his narrative visions and techniques on the other hand. The study begins with the title and cover introduction indicating their interactions with place in the novel. It then goes on to analyze the narrative-text and explore the aesthetics of place, its functions, levels and techniques. A combination of artistic and semiotic approaches was adopted to study the introduction of the novel and its linguistic and non-linguistic signs regarding place and its interactions with text. One of the most significant findings to of Jabal Haliya constitutes a central force for narrative construction which generally contributes to the novel coherence.
