Wildlife in Central and Northern Arabia through foreign travelers eyes in the period 1223-1342 AH (1808-1924 CE)

Abstract

This study examines examples from the writings of Western travelers about the wilderness environment and wildlife in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, aiming to identify the diversity and nature of wildlife. It also seeks to bring into focus the most prominent animals of the wilderness environment and the geographical conditions suitable for their habitats. This contributes to assisting the National Center for Wildlife Conservation and Protected Areas in determining the original habitats of these species and subsequently reintroducing them, ensuring the success and sustainability of efforts to restore the vitality of the land and environment in the Kingdom. The writings of these travelers reflect a keen interest in the environmental, geographical, and wildlife aspects of Arabia, characterized by a high degree of accuracy and clarity. Their accounts highlight the key species of wildlife that once roamed the Arabian Peninsula and precisely identify their native habitats and suitable environments, particularly in the northern, central, and eastern regions of Arabia. These areas were the primary focus of Western travelers' journeys to the regions that now constitute the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
