Imam Al-Nesaee’s Methodology in Resolving Discrepancies in the Wording of Hadiths

This study examines fifty-one chapters and issues addressed by Imam Al-Nesaee in his Al-Sunan Al-Kubra, wherein he explicitly notes discrepancies in the wording of narrators despite the shared origin of the hadiths. Narration of hadiths by meaning, leading to wording and meaning variations, is a well-known issue in Hadith research. This study investigates such discrepancies through the lens of hadith scholars’ works and elucidates the critics’ methodology for identifying the correct meaning in hadiths with unified origins or in the wording of a Companion (if the hadith pertains to actions), even if based on predominant probability, clarifying the implications of these discrepancies by analyzing the narrators’ divergent wordings. The inductive-analytical-deductive approach is adopted. Key findings indicate that all examined chapters and cases involve discrepancies that impact derived legal rulings. Results revealed that Al-Nesaee was the first to systematically address discrepancies in narrators’ wording. His methodology for resolving such discrepancies involves explicit citation of narrations or narrators, textual indications in chapter headings, and alignment with critical consensus. Key recommendations include studying discrepancies in narrators’ wordings in (the two authentic Hadith Books) due to their stringent authenticity criteria.
