The study sought to critically examine the role of Saudi universities in advancing the Sustainable University Principles within the framework of global classifications, while also identifying the developmental requirements necessary to enhance this role in light of international experiences. Employing a content analysis methodology, the research sample encompassed Saudi universities participating in the UI GreenMetric and Higher Education Impact Rankings between 2019 and 2025, alongside comparative cases from the University of California, Davis (USA) and the University of Queensland (Australia). The findings revealed that Saudi universities have undertaken notable initiatives toward sustainability, with institutions such as King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and Qassim University attaining commendable positions in global rankings. Nevertheless, the majority of participating universities were found to require intensified efforts to achieve more competitive standings. The study further underscored that advancing the role of universities in realizing sustainability necessitates a multifaceted approach, including strategic and governance measures (such as comprehensive institutional strategies and strengthened governance structures), infrastructural and operational reforms (notably the adoption of renewable energy), and academic as well as cultural interventions (particularly the integration of sustainability into curricula and educational programs).Downloads
