Abstract

This study investigates the interplay between geography, people, and culture in Andalusia during the Taifa period of the 5th century AH/11th century CE, using cultural geography as a lens to understand how the collapse of Cordoba’s central authority transformed the region from a unified to a fragmented cultural space. It highlights how ethnic and demographic distribution shaped the identity of each kingdom, and how Taifa rulers employed culture, architecture, and literature to legitimize their authority and offset military weakness. The research traces cultural phenomena born of this spatial-political interaction, including the flourishing of the muwashshah as a hybrid poetic form, the rise of translation and scientific inquiry, and the emergence of new creative centers such as Seville, Toledo, and Granada. Through a historical-analytical approach, the study connects cultural expressions to their geopolitical contexts, concluding that fragmentation fostered intense cultural competition, which paradoxically produced a golden age of Andalusian creativity even as it sowed the seeds of political decline.
