The Effectiveness of Professional Intervention by Social Workers with Inpatients in Government Hospitals Using the Bridge Model: A Study Applied to Patients and Their Families in Riyadh

The study investigated the challenges and requirements involved in discharging long-stay patients from government hospitals, focusing on family perspectives and the role of social workers through the bridge model. Using a descriptive-analytic approach with a comprehensive inventory of 101 patients and 39 social workers, the findings revealed that most families (63.4%) and patients themselves (65.3%) resisted discharge, while nearly 80% of patients were hospitalized at the Ministry of Health’s expense. Significant statistical differences emerged between families’ economic levels and discharge obstacles, as well as between male patients’ disease types and obstacles. Families rated discharge obstacles at 3.62/5 and social workers at 3.95/5, while requirements for discharge scored higher—4.11/5 among families and 4.71/5 among social workers—indicating strong agreement. The application of the bridge model averaged 4.31/5, underscoring its effectiveness in supporting patients and families and facilitating smoother transitions from hospital to community.Downloads
