Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of the ʿAyyārīn during the Buyid era by analyzing how orientalists in the Encyclopaedia of Islam portrayed them and comparing these accounts with Islamic historical sources to assess points of convergence and divergence. Employing historical, analytical, and comparative methods, the research traces the origins and development of the ʿAyyārīn, examines their social role, and critiques orientalist narratives against Islamic accounts. Structured into three sections -an introduction to the Encyclopaedia of Islam and its methodology, a detailed overview of the ʿAyyārīn in Buyid society, and a critical analysis of orientalist writings- the study reveals inconsistencies in orientalist interpretations, oscillating between sociological explanations and moral condemnation. In contrast, Islamic sources consistently link the ʿAyyārīn to the decline of political authority, highlighting their role in exacerbating instability in security and economic conditions.
