Similarity and Contrast in the Poem Ya Sahra’a ‘O Desert’ by Ghazi Al-Gosaibi

Abstract

This study examines similarity and contrast in Ghazi Al-Gosaibi's poem Ya Sahra’a, exploring their mechanisms through a stylistic approach. The research is organized into an introduction, a preface, three sections, and a conclusion. The introduction discusses the concepts of similarity and contrast, while the first section analyzes them at the phonetic level, the second at the syntactic level, and the third at the semantic level. Key findings include the poet’s predominant use of declarative styles over constructive ones, reflecting his need for clear, unambiguous expression of his emotions toward his homeland. Affirmation surpasses negation, declarative styles outnumber constructive, and verbal sentences dominate nominal ones. Despite these imbalances, the interplay of contrasts enriches the poem's interpretative depth and clarifies the poet’s intentions. The lexicon of the poem is imbued with expressions of sadness and fragility, shedding light on the poet’s psyche. These linguistic choices reveal the inner emotional landscape of the text, characterized by sorrow, pain, and a sense of disorientation. This study underscores how stylistic contrasts enhance the poem's emotional resonance and thematic clarity.
