Death in If the Night Drowns Me by Abdullah al-Fayfi: A Stylistic Study

This paper examines Abdullah al-Fayfi’s poetic vision of death in his debut collection If the Night Drowns Me, where death emerges as a pervasive theme articulated through abundant vocabulary, imagery, and symbolism. Using a stylistic approach, the study analyzes three dimensions: the lexicon of death, the binary opposition of life and death, and the personification of abstractions. The findings demonstrate that al-Fayfi constructs a dialectic in which death is intricately interwoven with life, freedom, triumph, and abstract concepts, producing creative oppositional binaries. The collection presents multiple poetic scenes of death, including the martyrdom of a Palestinian child, the biblical narrative of Cain and Abel, and the experience of orphanhood. Furthermore, the personification of abstract entities—treated as living beings subject to death—reveals the poet’s strategy of imbuing abstractions with vitality and then withdrawing it to heighten symbolic significance. This stylistic employment positions death not merely as an endpoint but as a generative force that reshapes poetic meaning and enriches the thematic structure of the collection.
