The Pragmatics of Legal Language Functions in Saudi Judicial Discourse

This study investigates the pragmatic functions of legal language in Saudi judicial discourse, focusing on its role in constructing judgments, conveying legal meanings, and achieving the communicative purposes of judicial texts. It examines the close relationship between legal language and judicial discourse and identifies four major functions: interpretive, regulatory, persuasive, and documentary. The study also explores how rhetorical strategies support these functions and enhance the clarity and effectiveness of legal communication. Particular attention is given to the interaction among linguistic functions and to the role of pragmatic context in determining how they operate within Saudi judicial discourse. An illustrative example is employed to demonstrate this functional interaction in practice. The findings show that legal language extends beyond the mere expression of legal rules and judgments; it constitutes a fundamental component of judicial discourse and contributes directly to achieving its intended purposes. The integration of its various functions enhances the clarity, precision, and semantic control of judicial judgments while facilitating their interpretation and application. The study therefore demonstrates that the pragmatic interaction of legal language functions, supported by rhetorical strategies and contextual considerations, is central to the effectiveness of Saudi judicial discourse.Downloads
