Abstract

This study investigates iltifat in Juz' Amma through an integrated rhetorical-pragmatic approach, treating it as a discourse phenomenon rather than merely a grammatical shift between pronouns or forms. It proposes that iltifat belongs to a broader category of discourse shifts encompassing changes in pronouns, tense, communicative situations, and speech acts. Drawing on pragmatics and the speech act theory of Austin and Searle, the study examines the communicative functions generated by these shifts at the locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary levels. The analysis proceeds along two complementary dimensions: the first examines the rhetorical manifestations of iltifat in Juz' Amma, while the second explores its pragmatic functions within Quranic discourse. The findings reveal that iltifat contributes significantly to the production of indirect speech acts, performing functions such as assertion, alerting, argumentative commitment, guidance, and rebuke. These functions extend beyond stylistic variation to shape the communicative and persuasive force of the discourse. The study concludes that iltifat actively influences the recipient's interpretation and response, transforming the recipient from a passive addressee into an active participant in constructing arguments and comprehending meaning.
