Abstract

This study critically examines how narrative discourse time has been approached in narratological studies of the story of Yusuf in the Quran. Framed within the methodology of the critique of criticism, the research evaluates the theoretical clarity, argumentative coherence, and methodological application of key narratological categories used in previous studies. It focuses exclusively on narrative analyses and excludes works rooted in Quranic exegesis or Quranic sciences, even when they adopt narrative terminology, in order to ensure methodological precision. The study analyzes the employment of two principal categories-temporal order and narrative speed-in examining discourse time in Surat Yusuf. The findings reveal that many studies have treated narrative discourse time selectively, failing to address its full range of theoretical components and often conflating related narratological terms. Such inconsistencies have led to imprecise interpretations of the Quranic narrative. The study concludes that a more rigorous and theoretically grounded application of narratological concepts is required in analyzing Quranic narrative discourse. By reassessing methodological practices within narrative studies, the research contributes to refining critical approaches to narrative time in Quranic discourse and highlights the importance of conceptual precision in literary and narratological analysis.
