The Practice of the People of Medina in Andalusia (From Formation to Expansion): A Historical Study

This study examines a pivotal historical issue in the science of jurisprudential principles, focusing on the practice of the people of Medina from its inception under Imam Malik ibn Anas al-Asbahi in Medina to its transmission and dissemination across the Maghreb and Andalusia. It examines the link between Maliki jurisprudence and the Medinan practice, provides a concise overview of the Maliki schools, and traces the stages and causes of the school’s spread in Andalusia. The research further highlights Andalusian applications of Medinan practice, concluding with key findings and recommendations. Chief among these findings is that the integration of Medinan practice into the Maliki school stemmed from its connection to Al-Muwatta, and that the school’s wide dissemination was driven by the dedication of its students to transmit and promote it, resulting in the establishment of multiple branches across both the East and the West.
