Yemeni Migrants in Massawa and Their Role in the Development of Public Life: Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries

This study investigates the role of Yemeni immigrants in Massawa and their influence on public life between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Massawa’s strategic location on the Red Sea, enhanced by the steam revolution and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, made it a hub for trade and migration, attracting Yemeni merchants and workers who became integral to its social and economic fabric. Yemenis engaged in diverse occupations—such as portering, street vending, shipbuilding, and commerce—while prominent Hadrami families established significant agricultural and trading enterprises that bolstered the local economy. Organized into four sections, the research explores Massawa’s historical-geographical context, migration factors, Yemeni integration and economic activity, and the broader transformations resulting from their presence. It concludes that political conflict and economic decline in Yemen drove migration, and that Yemeni immigrants not only assimilated into the Massawa community but also shaped its cultural, religious, and economic development, leaving a lasting imprint on the city’s public life.Downloads
