Qur’anic Psychological Anatomy: Methodological Rooting, Building an Analytical Tool, and Inductive Reading of the Mechanisms of the Human Soul in Surat Al-Tawbah

This study sets out to establish a methodological framework called “Qur’anic psychological anatomy” for analyzing the mechanisms of the human psyche in Qur’anic discourse, with a practical application to Surat Al-Tawbah. It employs an inductive and analytical qualitative content analysis, drawing on classical Islamic scholarship (Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Ghazali, Ibn Rajab, Ibn Ashour), modern Muslim psychologists (Badri, Najati, al-Sana`), and Western psychological models. The framework rests on three components: a layered reading tool that integrates Qur’anic testimony, inferred psychological mechanisms, and academic parallels; a content analysis instrument validated through measures of reliability and consistency; and an inductive survey of six psychological domains in Surat Al-Tawbah—hypocrisy, fear, remorse, trust and betrayal, psychological defenses, and repentance. The findings confirm the methodology’s capacity for epistemological rooting and procedural framing, emphasizing the primacy of Qur’anic terminology while noting intersections with Western psychology that differ in purpose, reference, and transcendence. The study recommends refining the tool through factor analysis and extending its application to other surahs, cautioning against reductionism, selectivity, and omission.Downloads
