Abstract

The current study undertakes a critical examination of the pivotal role of semantic theory in informing translation theory and practice, by exploring the importance of integrating semantic theory into the translation process. The study attempted to illuminate the complex relationship between meaning, context, and translation, with a focus on English-Arabic language pairs. The study sought to investigate the intersection of semantic theory, which delves into the semantic value of linguistic expressions, and translation theory, which encompasses the description, understanding, and reflection of the translation process. The primary aim of this study was to examine the importance of integrating semantic theory into translation theory and practice, by revealing its transformative potential in optimizing translation outcomes. Indeed, the validity of linguistic and semantic theories is tested through their application in translation, rendering it essential for translators to grasp the pivotal role of semantics in the translation process. The investigation underscored the challenges posed by semantic complexity and strived to explore the strategies employed to overcome them, providing a nuanced understanding of how semantic concepts shape the translation process. This study exhibited how semantic theory can significantly enhance translators' comprehension of source texts, facilitate more accurate and nuanced translations and elevate the quality of translation practice. The findings of this study uncovered a compelling case for the integral role of semantic theory in bridging the gap between translation theory and practice, with far-reaching implications for the field of translation studies through illuminating the complex relationships between semantics, context, and translation. This study urges the development of more effective translation strategies, enhancing the quality and accuracy of translated texts.
