The Writings of Malhah Abdullah in Critique of Saudi Theater: A Study in Light of Meta-Criticism

Abstract

This research aims to explore Malhah Abdullah's writings on Saudi theater critique through the lens of meta-criticism, as defined by critics who have sought to delineate clear and specific procedures for this field. The study focuses on her seminal works: "The Impact of Bedouinism on Theater in Saudi Arabia" and "Women's Theater: Between the Tribal Foundation and the Challenges of Modernization in Saudi Theater." The research is structured into an introduction and two main sections corresponding to these studies. The first section examines "The Impact of Bedouinism on Theater in Saudi Arabia," while the second section addresses "Women's Theater: Between the Tribal Foundation and the Challenges of Modernization in Saudi Theater." Key findings of the research highlight that Malhah Abdullah's critical work primarily aims to illuminate the deficiencies in Saudi theater that have hindered its progress, with the intention of facilitating reforms. Her critical approach is grounded in a historical methodology, incorporating social and anthropological perspectives to explain the marginalization of Saudi women in theater. Furthermore, her studies adhere to the requirements of historical and social analysis, striving to portray women in Saudi theater from an objective, moderate, and feminist standpoint, eschewing any form of extremism in her critique.
