Manifestations of Bipolar Disorder in the Short Story Collection Lithium

Abstract

This research examines the manifestations of bipolar affective disorder in the short story collection Lithium. It analyzes how the author represents this psychological condition, starting with the outer cover, progressing through story titles, and exploring the content of the stories, which depict characters from diverse cultures and genders suffering from the disorder. The study also considers the back cover, highlighting the collection’s rich symbolism of the two poles of bipolar disorder: mania and depression. The findings reveal that the collection effectively employs literary and artistic techniques to depict the disorder. The outer cover design, story titles, and character names reflect the psychological states of the characters. Key indicators of bipolar disorder are portrayed through various behavioral actions, both intentional and unconscious, alongside emotional and cognitive symptoms. Furthermore, the stories delve into the psychological conflicts and suppressed emotions of individuals with bipolar disorder, using techniques such as drawing, writing, and internal monologues as forms of emotional expression. Through these methods, the collection captures the complexities of bipolar disorder, merging artistic creativity with a profound exploration of psychological struggles.
