Abstract

This study investigates the argumentative dimension in autobiographical discourse through a pragmatic approach, focusing on the interplay between the witness (the narrating self) and the witnessed (the narrated experience). It argues that autobiography transcends mere documentation of personal events and instead operates as a persuasive cultural discourse that reconstructs reality and shapes meaning. The research analyzes how Arab autobiographical texts employ argumentative strategies to position the narrator not simply as a recorder of facts, but as a rhetorical agent engaged in communicative interaction with the reader. Structured into two main sections—one addressing the mirrors of the witness and the other examining the image of the witnessed—the study highlights the rhetorical sequences and narrative mechanisms that underpin autobiographical argumentation. The findings reveal that the witnessed functions as a reflective surface for transformations in consciousness and memory, while the witness actively negotiates identity, values, and worldview. Through realistic, symbolic, and metaphorical representations, autobiography establishes persuasive communication that reinforces existential meaning and cultural awareness. The study concludes that autobiographical writing constitutes a dynamic argumentative practice in which narrative rhetoric becomes a tool for reconstructing selfhood and reinterpreting lived experience.
