The Term Baḥr ‘Poetic Metre’ in Arabic Prosody: A Terminological Study

This study investigates the term baḥr in Arabic prosody from a terminological perspective grounded in the historical method. It seeks to trace the conceptual development of the term within Arabic prosodic discourse and to clarify the reasons behind the ambiguity surrounding its definition and usage. Focusing on both early and modern prosodic writings, the research argues that the contemporary understanding of baḥr as a technical term for poetic metre does not reflect its actual status in early prosodic literature. The study is organized into two main sections following the introduction: the first examines the emergence of the term and its degree of circulation, while the second addresses the problematics of naming and definition. The findings demonstrate that the term baḥr was not widely used in early prosodic works, particularly before the fifth century AH, and that attributing this terminology to al-Khalil ibn Ahmad lacks historical evidence. Instead, early prosodists employed alternative terms to describe poetic metre, including genera, patterns, types, origins, and hemistichs, reflecting a different conceptual framework. By distinguishing between the linguistic and technical meanings of baḥr, the study contributes to a clearer understanding of Arabic prosodic terminology and its historical evolution.Downloads
