The Novel of the Historical Phenomenon: A Reading of The Flight of the Cranes in the Cities of Agate by Omaima Al-Khamis

Abstract

This study introduces the concept of the “novel of the historical phenomenon” through an analysis of The Flight of the Cranes in the Cities of Agate by Omaima Al-Khamis. Unlike conventional historical novels that primarily reconstruct events, the novel approaches history as a complex cultural and intellectual phenomenon, particularly the crisis of the Arab mind portrayed in the narrative as the “imprisoned mind.” The research argues that this mode of historical representation requires a distinct narrative structure characterized by breadth, complexity, and multilayered interaction between historical reference and imaginative reconstruction. Organized into three analytical sections, the study examines the novel’s method of invoking history, the features of the historical phenomenon within its discourse, and the deeper implications underlying this phenomenon. The findings reveal that representing history as a phenomenon generates a richly textured narrative form marked by multiplicity of characters, intertwined events, expanded temporal and spatial dimensions, and dense descriptive detail. The study further demonstrates that this narrative approach imposes greater intellectual and artistic demands on the novelist, as it requires sustained engagement with the complexity, historical extension, and cultural influence of the phenomenon under representation. Ultimately, the research highlights the capacity of contemporary Saudi fiction to reimagine history through innovative and philosophically informed narrative structures.
