Linguistic Challenges in Translating the Active Participle in Surah Yusuf into English

This study examines the linguistic challenges associated with translating the active participle (ism al-fā‘il) in Surah Yusuf into English. Through a comparative analysis of two translations—Hilali and Khan’s and Palmer’s—the research investigates how different linguistic and cultural backgrounds influence translation choices. The study specifically focuses on active participle forms derived from repeated roots, analyzing 54 occurrences across 20 linguistic roots. Employing a comparative methodology, the research is divided into twenty sections based on these roots. The findings highlight that existing translations struggle to convey the full meaning of the active participle, often resorting to nouns, adjectives, verbs, or relative clauses in English, whereas Arabic expresses it through a single structured word. This divergence results in a loss of key semantic aspects, particularly the active participle’s function as an agent and its connotations of permanence and continuity. Translators frequently adopt descriptive and verbal expressions, which, while attempting to convey the intended meaning, fail to fully preserve the original linguistic nuances.
