Abstract

This study examines media-related lexical collocations in the Riyadh Dictionary of Contemporary Arabic, focusing on their semantic properties and structural patterns. It also traces the lexical origins of the constituent words through classical and modern Arabic dictionaries to explore the relationship between traditional lexical meanings and their contemporary media usage. Adopting a descriptive and analytical approach, the research investigates collocations associated with the lexical items media, agency, journalist, and broadcasting, while analyzing their semantic functions and grammatical structures. The findings demonstrate that the Riyadh Dictionary gives substantial attention to documenting lexical collocations characteristic of modern media discourse. Descriptive collocations constitute the predominant structural pattern, whereas numerous lexical items appear in multiple collocational combinations, reflecting the productivity of media terminology. The lexicographical analysis further reveals that many contemporary media collocations preserve semantic links with the meanings recorded in classical and modern Arabic dictionaries. The study concludes that lexical collocations serve as an essential mechanism for expressing concepts related to media institutions, communication practices, media professionals, and broadcasting activities, thereby highlighting their importance in the description and standardization of contemporary Arabic media terminology.
