Representations of Scholars’ Attitudes toward Knowledge in Arabic Biographical Dictionaries: Between Possession and Circulation - A Cultural Approach

This study explores cultural representations of scholars’ attitudes toward knowledge in Arabic biographical dictionaries, focusing on the tension between individual possession and the circulation of knowledge. It approaches knowledge as both symbolic capital and a shared cultural heritage accumulated across generations, whereby the scholar functions not as its absolute owner but as its custodian and transmitter. From this perspective, practices that obstruct the transmission of knowledge acquire cultural significance because their consequences extend beyond the individual to collective memory. Rather than examining such accounts for their historical factuality, the study reads them as cultural representations preserved and reproduced within biographical discourse. It first considers the concealment of knowledge in relation to established cultural norms and representations of deviation, then examines two principal areas: representations of obstructed knowledge circulation and disruptions in the existential relationship between the scholar and knowledge. The findings demonstrate that Arabic biographical dictionaries distinguish between scholarly status and personal conduct, acknowledging a scholar’s intellectual merit while critically recording practices regarded as compromising the rights of knowledge, the community, or the culturally expected role of the scholar. The study further proposes extending this approach to representations of learners, transmitters, muftis, and judges.Downloads
