Representations of Cultural Pluralism in Selected Gulf Women’s Novels: A Cultural Criticism Approach

Abstract

This study examines representations of cultural pluralism in selected Gulf women’s novels through the lens of cultural criticism, focusing on how literary narratives negotiate diversity, identity, and social hierarchy. It investigates the explicit and implicit cultural structures through which race, lineage, sect, class, slavery, superstition, and inherited customs shape social relations and reproduce inequality. Particular attention is given to the representation of the educated woman as an agent capable of challenging traditional structures and reshaping collective consciousness. The study also explores migration as a catalyst for reconstructing identity, alongside economic transformation, employment, changing lifestyles, social integration, isolation, conformity, and intergenerational tensions. Drawing on cultural criticism, the analysis reveals how Gulf women’s fiction moves beyond documenting social and cultural diversity to interrogate the mechanisms of symbolic power underlying it. The findings show that the selected novels expose changing structures of domination and illuminate the negotiation of identity across generations and evolving social contexts. They also demonstrate a dynamic interaction between cultural heritage and contemporary pressures. The study concludes that Gulf women’s fiction transforms cultural difference into a productive narrative force through which social inequalities are questioned, identities are renegotiated, and possibilities for social integration are articulated.
