Abstract

This study examines the communicative and aesthetic functions of deixis in Hussein Abdullah Siraj’s poetic drama Gharam Wallada from a pragmatic perspective. It investigates how deictic expressions contribute to effective communication, mutual understanding, and dialogic coherence while also enhancing the aesthetic qualities of dramatic discourse. The study approaches poetic drama as a literary form combining the characteristics of poetry and theater and as a medium capable of contributing to social awareness. Its analysis focuses on five categories of deixis: personal, temporal, spatial, social, and discourse deixis. Particular attention is given to their linguistic, semantic, pragmatic, and aesthetic functions within dramatic dialogue. The findings demonstrate that the play employs a wide range of deictic expressions that contribute significantly to communication and to linguistic and aesthetic coherence between the interlocutors. Personal, temporal, spatial, and social deixis are particularly prominent, while discourse deixis occurs less frequently. The analysis also highlights Hussein Siraj’s skill in employing deictic expressions in ways appropriate to their dramatic and communicative contexts. The study ultimately demonstrates the value of pragmatic analysis for understanding the communicative and aesthetic dimensions of Saudi poetic drama and calls for greater scholarly attention to this literary form.
