Abstract

This study explores the role of mental spaces and conceptual metaphors in Imruʾ al-Qays’s Muʿallaqah through a cognitive literary framework. Focusing on the structures of the ruins and the journey, the research examines how cognitive mechanisms contribute to the construction of poetic meaning and the organization of emotional experience. The study analyzes a range of mental spaces, including the poet’s encounter with abandoned ruins, expressions of lamentation and complaint, and the traditional love prelude, demonstrating that these elements function not merely as recurring themes but as interconnected cognitive systems. Drawing on theories of conceptual metaphor, the analysis investigates structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors and their role in shaping the poem’s worldview. The findings reveal that conceptual metaphor serves as a central organizing principle that transforms personal experience into meaningful poetic representation. The study further shows that the mental space of the ruins constitutes the primary conceptual framework from which other spaces, such as the journey, longing, and complaint, emerge and develop. Ultimately, the research highlights the value of cognitive approaches in reinterpreting classical Arabic poetry and demonstrates how mental spaces and conceptual metaphors contribute to the richness, coherence, and emotional depth of Imruʾ al-Qays’s poetic discourse.
