Semiotics of illustrations in graphic literature and their role in enhancing identity

This study aims to provide a semiotic study of illustrations in graphic literature and analyze their role in enhancing cultural identity. It explores how illustrations, as a form of visual expression, contribute to conveying culturally reinforcing messages that solidify identity through the use of symbols and visual signs in graphic literature. Graphic literature, as an artistic medium that combines text and imagery, is examined through selected examples that utilize illustrations to highlight elements of cultural identity, such as traditional symbols, colors, and artistic styles. Illustrations are shown to be an effective tool for promoting identity, as they reflect the social and historical values of a society and serve as a cultural bridge connecting the past and the present. The semiotic methodology is employed in the present study. The findings showed that illustrations play a significant role in enhancing cultural and social identity by representing visual symbols associated with customs, traditions, and local environments through graphic literature.
