The Role of Media in Confronting and Promoting Public Awareness of the Dangers of Drugs

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the importance of Yemeni media outlets that advocate for the dissemination of information on drugs dangers, highlighting the impact of local media on promoting the awareness of the Yemeni public in this regard, and the challenges hindering the role of media in combating drugs. It also sought to determine the reach of media roles to the administrative staff, faculty, and students of Thamar University. Surveying Thamar University community and the city social environment through awareness programs and news reports analysis, the descriptive, survey and analytical approach was employed. A questionnaire was administered to 60 individuals affiliated with Thamar University Furthemore, 10 personal interviews were conducted with researchers at the university, half of whom were interested in psychiatry and the other half in media. The study key findings showed that the role of media was instrumental in raising awareness about the dangers of drugs. It was also revealed that media targeted broader social groups in anti-drug campaigns, and fulfilled its responsibility in promoting societal acceptance of the idea of rehabilitating addicts and improving their psychological stability and social reintegration post-recovery.
