Women’s Role in the Textile Industry in Cordoba and Seville during the 4th and 5th Centuries AH / 9th and 10th centuries AD

This study explores the significant role of women in the textile industry of Cordoba and Seville during the fourth and fifth centuries AH, a period marked by Andalusia’s cultural flourishing. Using a descriptive and analytical approach grounded in original sources such as Ibn Hazm’s account of women’s work in spinning and weaving and Ibn Abdun’s treatise on market regulation, the research highlights women’s active involvement in textile production and its impact on their financial and social standing. Structured into three sections—geographical distribution of women’s textile activities, their participation in market transactions, and the networks they built for economic advancement—the study demonstrates that women were not confined to domestic production but engaged in commercial markets, forging relationships that enhanced their financial and social mobility. Ultimately, it reveals how their professional achievements translated into broader social and political influence, challenging prevailing stereotypes and offering a new perspective on female participation in medieval Andalusian economic life.
