Economic Transformations in the Arabian Gulf and Iran from Traditional Trade to Modern Capitalist Economy (1900-1930)

This study investigates the transformation of the Arabian Gulf and Iran from traditional commercial capitalism to modern energy-driven capitalism in the early 20th century, focusing on the period up to the 1930s. Beginning with a definition of capitalism and its 16th-century origins, it highlights key factors that enabled this transition: the introduction of steamships, which accelerated trade through scheduled maritime transport; the establishment of banks, which mobilized savings and converted idle capital into productive investment; and the rise of artificial pearls, which integrated the region into global markets and reshaped production structures. The analysis culminates with the impact of the 1929 Great Depression, which disrupted economic activity and slowed the pace of modernization. Overall, the research underscores how technological advances, financial institutions, and global trade connections propelled the Gulf and Iran toward modern capitalism, while external crises tempered the momentum of this shift.Downloads
